Dear members and friends of the AIS,
kindly find the invitation to our next lecture, on 1 June, 5 pm:
Title: Young “Peace-Makers” and Conceptualizations of Pluralism in Bandung, Indonesia
Speaker: Dayana Lengauer, BA Ma, PHD student.
Abstract: Bandung, West Java’s capital city and main educational center, is bustling with the activities of young people organized in komunitas, or fluid social formations espousing the principles of amity, creativity, and peer solidarity. In this lecture, I draw from ethnographic material collected during a one-year fieldwork in Bandung for my doctoral thesis “Pluralism as Practice” and present several komunitas perdamaian, or so called peace communities, their local genealogies, activities, and respective fields of engagement. I then move on to discussing new conceptualizations of pluralism that notably differ from state-sponsored discourses and what older generations might associate with Bhinneka Tunggal Ika or “unity in diversity”. These new conceptualizations, circulating among young peace activists, situate feelings and emotional ties directly into ideas of how ethnic and, particularly, religious difference and diversity should be dealt with. Although small in number, these komunitas represent islands of pluralist practices and sensibilities in contexts characterized by increasing levels of religious intolerance and a hardening of religious identities.
Dayana Lengauer is recipient of the Doctoral Fellowship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences at the Institute for Social Anthropology and PhD student at the University of Vienna.
