Javanese Music & Dance Sĕrat Cĕnthini Symposium – 14-15 November 2024 KUG Graz
November 14 - November 15
Event Navigation
This symposium places the early nineteenth-century Javanese manuscript Sĕrat Cĕnthini in scholarly and performative focus. The manuscript overflows with ethnographic descriptions of music and dance performances, Sufi Islamic religious practice and philosophy, and the myriad sonic and visual minutia of daily life as portrayed through the interpretations and investigations of its traveling protagonists. The events in this symposium provide scholarly, practical, and performative approaches to understanding the text and its meaning in the past and the present.
Taking place over two days, the events include a morning of workshops, an afternoon of presentations, and a full-length concert featuring Didik Nini Thowok, Kadek Puspasari, and gamelan performers from around Europe.
